Emily Dickinson, 1752

Ja, God is in oergeunstich God -
Hy kin der net goed oer
En sjoch ús leaver as mei Him
Wat boartsjen mei elkoar.

God is indeed a jealous God -
He cannot bear to see
That we had rather not with Him
But with each other play.

It gedichtsje lit him lêze as in kanttekening by Exodus 34:14: ‘For thou shalt worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God’, neffens de King James Version. Yn de Wumkes-oersetting: ‘hwent dû scilst dy net bûge foar in oare god, hwent des Heare namme is Oerginstige, in oerginstich God is Er.’
