Scientists say the average human
\nlife gets three months longer every year.
\nBy this math, death will be optional. Like a tie
\nor dessert or suffering. My mother asks
\nwhether I\u2019d want to live forever.
\n\u201cI\u2019d get bored,\u201d I tell her. \u201cBut,\u201d she says,
\n\u201cthere\u2019s so much to do,\u201d meaning
\nshe believes there\u2019s much she hasn\u2019t done.
\nThirty years ago she was the age I am now
\nbut, unlike me, too industrious to think about
\nbirds disappeared by rain. If only we had more
\ntime or enough money to be kept on ice
\nuntil such a time science could bring us back.
\nOf late my mother has begun to think life
\nshort-lived. I\u2019m too young to convince her
\notherwise. The one and only occasion
\nI was in the same room as the Mona Lisa<\/em>,
\nit was encased in glass behind what I imagine
\nwere velvet ropes. There\u2019s far less between
\nourselves and oblivion\u2014skin that often defeats
\nits very purpose. Or maybe its purpose
\nisn\u2019t protection at all, but rather to provide
\na place, similar to a doctor\u2019s waiting room,
\nin which to sit until our names are called.
