Postcards pictured V<\/small><\/big><\/p>\n

Three picture postcards, sent to \u2018Otto\u2019 by \u2018Rosa\u2019 in Mittweida (near Dresden in Saxony, Germany) during World War I<\/small>, presumably in 1914, between 31 October and 23 November. No addresses, stamps or postmarks; apparently sent in envelopes.<\/p>\n

As can be deduced from Rosa\u2019s messages, Otto travelled from Mittweida over Leipzic and Cologne to Lomme, near Lille in Northern France. Most likely he was a soldier. On 31 July 1914, Germany had ordered the mobilization of its troops. In the following days Germany declared war on Russia and France. Otto may have been part of the German troops that invaded France from the north, through Belgium. Perhaps he was also one of the 2,5 million German, French and British soldiers who fought in the first Battle at the Marne, in Northern France, on 6\u201312 September 1914. Half a million of them were killed.<\/small><\/p>\n

For many of the German soldiers the mobilization was at first like a holiday; some of them even marched with flowers in the muzzles of their rifles. Propaganda and an atmosphere dominated by nationalism and militarism added to the notion of \u2018ein frischer, fr\u00f6hlicher Krieg\u2019. These picture postcards are striking expressions of that sentiment. Once used for sending messages, they often show a cynical combination of propaganda and wartime reality.<\/small><\/p>\n

Lieber Otto, du kannst die B\u00fccher dort behalten, wenn du willst, ich habe sie gelesen. Deine Eltern haben auch dein Paket mit Briefen und Karten erhalten, ich soll dich vielmals gr\u00fc\u00dfen von Ihnen. Bei uns ist eine K\u00e4lte, wie zu Weihnachten, da\u00df [!] Laub ist schon alles runter. Heute vorm Jahre war ich mit dir in Altmittweida zur Kirmes da\u00df [!] waren sch\u00f6nre Zeiten, nicht wahr Otto?

Ich war in einer Stimmung, ich h\u00e4tte den ganzen Tag weinen k\u00f6nnen. Heute geht es wieder, war bei deinen Eltern einmal, deine Mutter hat dein Geld auf die Sparkasse geschafft. Vergi\u00df mich nicht mein Otto und komm bald wieder

Fr\u00e4ulein Feldgrau<\/em> was a silent film comedy made in 1914, starring Else B\u00f6tticher (1880\u20131966). She played a German baroness outsmarting the French shortly after the outbreak of the war.<\/small><\/p>\n

Ein Soldat<\/nobr> der auf Urlaub da war, hat in letzter Nacht seine 4 Kinder und sich selbst erschossen. Seine Frau war nur erst gestorben. Er hat sich das zu sehr angenommen. K\u00f6hler hei\u00dft er und sie wohnten im Br\u00fchl. Ich wei\u00df nicht ob du Ihn kennst.
